What to know about orientation
When things like anxiety or a stressful situation threaten to overtake your sanity, one way to bring yourself back to being in the HERE & NOW is to orient to your surroundings. This basically means checking out what is around you and letting your eyes and attention wander OUTSIDE of yourself and into your environment.
.
Suggestions for listening:
- Start with your eyes open.
- You may close your eyes from time to time if that seems to be what your system would like, but the key is to orient and see what is around you.
- Be in a place where you have some line of sight (able to see outside, or in a room that has some space to it, as well as some pleasant objects to look at such as paintings, plants, books, etc.).
- Sitting is best, but you can stand as well. The key is being able to see around you.
