I’ve got a brainy question for you:
Do you know the basics of chaos theory and the butterfly effect?
I’ve also got a new video for you, but before you click over, hang in with me here for a few minutes to review the fundamentals of these two concepts (courtesy of Wikipedia):
And I’ll explain why they matter in a moment..
“Chaos theory (or chaology) is an interdisciplinary area of scientific study and branch of mathematics. It focuses on underlying patterns and deterministic laws of dynamical systems that are highly sensitive to initial conditions. These were once thought to have completely random states of disorder and irregularities. Chaos theory states that within the apparent randomness of chaotic complex systems, there are underlying patterns, interconnection, constant feedback loops, repetition, self-similarity, fractals and self-organization.”
What I want to point out are the words, “highly sensitive to initial conditions” and “underlying patterns, repetition, self-organization.”
Moving back to Wikipedia:
“The butterfly effect, an underlying principle of chaos, describes how a small change in one state of a deterministic nonlinear system can result in large differences in a later state (meaning there is sensitive dependence on initial conditions). A metaphor for this behavior is that a butterfly flapping its wings in Brazil can cause a tornado in Texas.”
The key words I want you to draw your attention to are “small change” and “large differences.”

So, what the heck does all this have to do with healing trauma and your nervous system?
EVERYTHING!!
In this new video, I talk about what I (as a nervous system expert and master somatic practitioner with over 20 years experience in the field) have seen makes or breaks a person’s capacity to fully rewire and regulate their nervous system (as an adult).
And, believe it or not, it has to do with the initial conditions that we were given as toddlers and children for learning how to learn (this is where chaos theory comes in).
(BTW: This is about more than just how our vagus nerve was initially wired up — though that is also important, and I cover it at length in other videos, like this one.)
As for the butterfly effect, it is clear from seeing the thousands upon thousands of students who have done my programs over the years learn how to learn differently, and then heal, that small, consistent, lifestyle changes ARE what tip the scales toward full nervous system regulation.
Today’s video is more of a “meta” concept for what it will take for us to NOT fail when we embark on a path of restoring health to our nervous system.
